Switzerland's population grew to 7.9 million people last year, with a quarter of residents born abroad, the Federal Statistics Office said Thursday.

"At the end of 2010, Switzerland's permanent resident population stood at 7,870,100 inhabitants, i.e. a rise of 84,300 persons compared with 2009," it said in a statement.

"A quarter of the people living in Switzerland were born abroad and immigrated to our country. Moreover, one out of eight inhabitants lives in one of the five large cities of Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Lausanne and Bern," it added.
