Swiss ski coach sacked for off-piste activity

The Swiss women's alpine ski coach Stefan Abplanalp was sacked by the national federation on Monday because of his misbehaviour off the piste.

The federation announced their decision on their website saying that his behaviour during the World Cup meeting in Sochi over the weekend had left them with no choice.

He will be replaced by Mauro Pini till the end of the season.

Results have not been impressive this season with no Swiss woman in the top 10 in the overall World Cup standings, but the federation made clear that it was more his behaviour away from the racing that had forced their hand.

"With the end of the season approaching, Swiss-Ski has terminated its collaboration with the coach of the women's ski team, he is sacked with immediate effect and has returned to Switzerland this morning (Monday)," read a statement from Swiss-Ski on their website.

"At the centre of this departure which is as regrettable as it was inevitable, are recent episodes which have taken place at the World Cup meeting in Sochi where Stefan Abplanalp made a fool of himself in public and on several occasions.

"The behaviour of the coach off piste had already brought him a written warning several days ago, thus Swiss-Ski sees it as being impossible to continue with the coach."
