We’re delighted to welcome you to the beta version of our English language news and information site – in Switzerland. We are extremely excited about this and would like to take a moment to introduce ourselves. And hopefully get to know you too.
We are working hard on adding more news, features, functionalities and interactive formats to the site and you can expect to see improvements every week.
Our to-do list is as long as the Gotthard tunnel, but please don’t hesitate to make it even longer for us – by giving us news tips, recommendations or general feedback. Indeed, feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of this article.

So what is The Local?
The Local publishes national news and information in English, in Sweden, Germany and now Switzerland. We have almost two million visitors to our sites each month – mostly foreign professionals, tourists and people around the world who are interested in what’s going on in these countries.
The publication first saw the light of day in 2004 as a weekly newsletter for English speaking immigrants in Sweden. But it quickly became a must-read website for the international community, with national news and information in English published by a team of dedicated journalists in Stockholm.
Our first foray outside of Sweden was in 2008, when we began publishing Germany’s news in English at thelocal.de. Both sites are now the main source for national news and information in English in those countries.
From our own experience as foreigners in these countries, we know how important it is to be part of a community, and that is what we have tried to create around The Local. But we also operate Toytown Germany and English Forum (in Switzerland) – the two most popular community sites in their respective countries.
Now we are working hard to make thelocal.ch the first choice for foreign professionals in Switzerland – but we also have more countries in the pipeline in 2011. We’ll keep you posted!
