The Greens in a northern Swiss canton have scored a surprising electoral victory over the weekend, getting their first candidate in the Basel-Landschaft canton elected, at the expense of the Swiss People's Party (UDV).

After the votes had been counted in the cantonal elections in the northern Swiss canton, Isaac Reber from the Green Party has defeated Jörg Krähenbühl from the UDC.

Reber scored a total of 28,444 votes, against 25,946 for the UDC representative, the Basler Zeitung newspaper reported.
