Swissgenetics said it has exported over 500,000 doses of semen for the first time in its history last year, to respond to increased demand in 50 countries.

The company, headquartered near Bern, also said that in the course of the past ten years, exports of its packaged semen have risen five-fold. In 2009, it sold up to 450,000 doses, mostly from the Simmental breed, followed by Red Holstein and Brown Swiss, the company said in a statement.

Despite the difficult economic situation in the agricultural market, the high quality of the Swiss bulls’ sperm is recognized worldwide, thanks to the attentive selection of young animals and production methods, the statement said.
