Storms cause mudslides in eastern Switzerland
Heavy storms on Sunday afternoon have caused mudslides and floods across eastern Switzerland, reports said.
The storms, which included hail downpours and strong winds, also knocked out railway services in the Appenzell region, while the route between Herisau and Urnäsch is expected to remain closed for several more days, said a report on the 20 Minuten daily.
Roads were flooded and cars were swept away in violent mudslides, as captured in amateur video footage on the internet. The storms also tore down tree branches, blocking streets, and flooded cellars and basements, while small rivers burst their banks.
In the Bernese Oberland, 240 people were trapped for several hours on the Schynige Platte after the cogwheel railway service that had transported them was disrupted, the paper said.
