The victim was part of a group of four boys who were with a Scout group at a nearby camp and had decided to hike a route from Charmey to Château-d'Oex.

On a steep section on the Pointe de Paray, some 2,250 metres above sea level, the 13-year-old slipped and fell off the mountainside, according to police in the canton of Freiburg.

His three companions were rescued by emergency workers, but only after several tries due to poor weather conditions.

In the wake of the accident, a team of psychologists was sent to the camp to counsel the Scouts there.
