Swiss held by Gabon in Olympic football opener

Ten-man Switzerland shared the spoils with Gabon on Thursday as the teams played out a 1-1 draw in their opening men’s football Group B game at the Olympic Games.

The Swiss struck first through an early Admir Mehmedi penalty after Innocent Emeghara was hauled down in the box.

Gabon weathered the early storm to equalize before half-time half-time with a close-range finish from St. Etienne striker Pierre Aubameyang.

Switzerland finished the game at St. James’ Park in Newcastle with ten men after midfielder Oliver Buff was sent off for a second yellow card.

The Swiss face South Korea on Sunday, before coming up against Mexico in the final group game on August 1st.
