The 50-year-old man, known only as Daniel F, is due in court later this month for having stabbed his girlfriend of the same age deep in her breast, online news site 20 Minuten reported.

Daniel woke in a jealous rage on his birthday two years ago, and stabbed his sleeping girlfriend several times with a 23cm-long kitchen knife. He only stopped when he was sure she was dead, the indictment read.

He then left and closed the door, telling the woman’s children that she was gone for a bit and that they could not go into the bedroom because there was a birthday surprise in there.

In the following days, Daniel took care of the children, a girl of 14 and a boy of 17, making them food and calming them in their mother’s absence.

He texted some of the woman’s friends and even got in touch with an old flame.

After a few days, they noticed a smell emanating from the bedroom, so they taped it up and sprayed deodorant to try to get rid of the odour. At that point, Daniel disappeared.

Later that evening, the woman’s son broke down the door and found his murdered mother. Daniel was arrested the following day.
