A Kosovar man was sentenced on Friday to seven years in jail for the attempted murder last summer of an Alpine wrestler who had his throat slit during an altercation at an Interlaken restaurant.

The Oberland regional court found the 32-year-old suspect guilty of trying to kill his victim on the garden terrace of a restaurant in the popular tourist resort.

The wrestler, a member of the right-wing populist Swiss People’s Party (SVP), said he was “relieved and very pleased” with the ruling, news agency SDA reports.

The court found that the attacker had slit the victim’s throat after the wrestler spilled some beer on the 32-year-old’s brother.

With his life in danger, the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors were able to stabilize his condition.

The SVP later found itself in hot water with an anti-racism body when it launched an incendiary advertisement claiming that “Kosovars slash Swiss” as part of its campaign to "stop mass immigration".

Bern cantonal migration authorities will rule at a later date on whether to deport the attacker.
