Geneva club sandwiches ‘world’s most costly’
Geneva is the most expensive city in the world to order a club sandwich in a hotel, according to a report on Thursday from booking website Hotels.com.
The website assessed the average price of a club in the Swiss city at £19.96 (28.91 francs or $31.32), putting it ahead of Paris (£17.99), which was rated the most expensive place to munch the sandwich last year.
The “Club Sandwich Index”, now in its second year, compares prices paid by guests for the staple fare at 840 hotels (with ratings ranging from three to five stars) in 28 cities around the world.
Hotels.com said the index serves as a barometer of affordability around the world, offering travellers an indication of the cost of living associated with their destination of choice.
“The beauty of the CSI is that we are able to offer travellers a single price comparison to show how far their money may stretch in each country,” Alison Couper from Hotels.com said in a statement.
The recipe for a club sandwich varies, but ingredients for the American invention can include chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce and mayonnaise between three slices of toasted bread cut into triangles.
Convention usually demands a tooth pick to hold the pieces together.
Finding such sandwiches is difficult at most Geneva restaurants, although they are available at some hotels in the city catering to international travellers.
Hotels.com said prices for a club in Geneva ranged from $34.33 in one five-star hotel (not identified) to a “more reasonable” £9.27 in a three-star establishment.
The Geneva average slipped from last year (£20.10) but not as much as in Paris, where clubs averaged $20.43.
On the whole, prices for average club sandwiches fell, according to the index, which is is also impacted by the effect of currency fluctuations.
Oslo ($17.51) ranked third, unchanged from last year, followed by Stockholm (£15.15) and Copenhagen (£14.64).
The cheapest club sandwich among the cities surveyed was New Delhi, where the price averaged £5.97.
Madrid (£9.68) ranked the cheapest among the European cities surveyed, just below Dublin (£9.87).
