City police on Tuesday released a surveillance video of a man suspected in the case, which is worrying visitors in the internationally renowned holiday destination.

The incident occurred at around 4.30am last Friday at the Breakwater Hotel, according to local media reports.

"A tourist from Switzerland had gotten into the elevator,” Miami Beach Police Sgt. Bobby Hernandez told 7News from the local WSVN TV station.

The woman “got into the elevator with the victim and said, 'Oh, I'm going to the same floor you're going to,'" Hernandez said.

"They got off on the victim's floor, he overpowered her, took her to her room, sexually assaulted her and he robbed her of money,” he said.

“He then fled the scene."

A hotel surveillance camera caught images of the man.

Police described the suspect as a black male in his 20s, about five feet ten inches (178 centimetres) tall, weighing 230 pounds (104 kilograms).

Officers scoured the neighbourhood of the hotel on the weekend in a bid to catch him.

Police now hope the distribution of the video, plus flyers in the neighbourhood, will allow them to nab the alleged offender.
