A man who dived off the stage at a heavy metal concert in Solothurn died after the crowd failed to catch him, media reported on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old was at a metal festival last Wednesday in the northern Swiss town headlined by an American group called the Suicidal Tendencies when he decided to dive from the stage into the crowd, local daily Solothurner Zeitung reported.

"Unfortunately, the crowd did not catch him properly and he hit the ground," Pipo Kofmehl, head of the Kulturfabrik Kofmehl concert venue told the paper.

At first the accident did not look serious, since the man had gotten to his feet and gone off to wash his hands, but security guards nonetheless took him to hospital, he said.

Police were only alerted to the accident the next day, when the man's condition deteriorated and he was rushed to the capital for specialized treatment.

He died on Friday, according to the report.

Police have opened an investigation but said they considered the man's death a tragic accident.

Ironically, the Facebook page for Suicidal Tendencies, a group begun in Los Angeles in 1981, shows photos of men jumping off a stage into the crowd.
