A 41-year-old man has died while apparently trying to reverse his car into a parking space.

The Blick newspaper reported that the fatal accident happened on Wednesday evening as the man was parking outside his apartment block in Scheid, in the canton of Graubünden.

As he reversed the car came off the road and dropped 20 metres down a steep embankment, canton of St Gallen police reported.

The vehicle rolled over several times before coming to rest on its roof on a school playground. The driver was thrown out of a side window.

An eye witness called an ambulance but paramedics were unable to save the man who died at the scene.
