A 69-year-old man in Altdorf in the canton of Uri has confessed to killing his bed-ridden wife with a knife, cantonal police said.

The 65-year-old woman of Serbian nationality was found dead in her bed in an apartment in the town, police said in a statement released on Tuesday.

An autopsy revealed that the woman died on Monday of massive injuries to the neck, the statement said.

Her husband admitted in an interview with the local prosecutor, conducted in the presence of his lawyer, to cutting her throat with a knife, police said.

However, he did not explain why he attacked the woman, who was sick.

The knife allegedly used in the attack was retrieved from the bedroom, police said.

Police said because of the risk that the husband might do harm to himself he was transferred to a special clinic where he remains under special medical supervision.

The local prosecutor’s office has requested that the man be remanded to face charges.
