A 67-year-old American man died after falling 200 metres while hiking in a mountain area near Zermatt, Valais cantonal police said on Sunday.

Cantonal police earlier reported the man as missing on Saturday.

Emergency rescue officials found the victim’s body a day later in the Täschalp area.

From the initial evidence, its appears the man fell while he was walking along a mountain trail.

Officials launched a major search for the missing man on Saturday, when an Air Zermatt helicopter and a Super Puma helicopter from the Swiss Army flew over the region.

The army helicopter was equipped with an infrared camera, police said.

An investigation into the accident is continuing.

The victim was identified as “John”
