Three Swiss couples fined for Ibiza van love
The Spanish resort of Ibiza is known for hot times and all-night partying but three Swiss couples found out that the anything-goes atmosphere has its limits.
The couples were fined for making love in the back of a van stopped by police checking for drunk drivers on the Mediterranean island, according to a report from the Diario de Ibiza picked up by Swiss media on Wednesday.
The driver of the van was pulled over early Tuesday as part of regular checks conducted by police in and around the city of Ibiza as partygoers travel from one nightclub to another, the newspaper said.
As officers talked to the van driver, who had not been drinking, they noticed the three couples were copulating without being troubled by the police presence.
The apparently untroubled officers asked the couples to cease their activities, get dressed and provide identification, according to the report.
The three men and three women were subsequently each fined €200 (243 francs) for not wearing seatbelts and for their lack of decency, the newspaper said.
Because the Swiss were prepared to immediately pay the fines, totalling €1,200, police subsequently reduced the penalty by half.
Police told local media that while it was not unusual in Ibiza to find couples “in action” in parked vehicles it was the first time they had fined anyone for lovemaking in a moving vehicle.
