A man who claimed to have been attacked and stabbed by muggers in Balsthal, in the canton of Solothurn, has confessed to police that he made the incident up and actually stabbed himself.

The 19-year-old withdrew his original statement made after the supposed attack in May and admitted that he stabbed himself in the stomach in a cry for attention from his peers, reports daily newspaper Blick.

Andreas Mock, spokesperson for Solothurn police, told the paper: “We pursued many different leads. But the more we investigated, the more we realized that nothing added up.”

According to Blick, the teenager injured himself to get the attention of his girlfriend, though the exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear.

“I don’t want to talk about it, but I want to apologise to those involved,” the man is quoted as saying.

Investigators are now pursuing a case against him for perverting the course of justice.
