The Vaud police patrol car was travelling with its sirens on towards Payerne to attend an incident in the town when it hit the man at around 2am, confirmed Fribourg police.

Despite braking sharply, the 27-year-old driver of the police car was unable to avoid the young man who was lying in the middle of the right carriageway of the motorway.

The victim was struck on the head by the left side of the vehicle and died at the scene.

The Fribourg prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the exact causes of the accident, which closed the A1 for four hours.
