Swiss mountain resort Zermatt is listed among the world's top ten towns and cities to visit in 2015 by Lonely Planet, the travel guide.

The car-free town in the canton of Valais ranks fourth behind Washington, DC, El Chaltén in Argentina and Milan, in the list of must-see places released this week.

“Intrepid hikers, mountaineers and ski fiends drool over the Matterhorn that rises above Zermatt,” Lonely Planet says of Zermatt and the 4,478-metre-high mountain that serves as one of its main attractions.

Next year, “this diva of resorts” celebrates the 150th anniversary of the mountain’s first ascent, the travel guide notes on its website.

British mountaineer Edward Whymper led his party of seven to the summit on July 14th 1865 “only for four to crash to their deaths on descent”.

Lonely Planet cites anniversary events that include the opening of the renovated Hörnli Hut at the base of the Matterhorn and “nail-biting theatre recreating Whymper’s joinery on Zermatt’s open-air stage”.

Other destinations on the top-ten list include Valetta, Malta; Plovdiv, Bulgaria; Salisbury, England; Vienna, Austria; Chennai, India and Toronto, Canada.
