A tram derailed and smashed into a shopping centre in Zurich on Tuesday morning amid snowy conditions in the city.

The number 14 tram crashed into a building housing a Coop City supermarket and a perfume shop in Zurich Oerlikon around 11.30am on Tuesday.

Speaking to newspaper 20 Minuten, a witness said the tram “appeared to miss a curve and carried straight on. Perhaps the track was icy.”

Police confirmed the accident, without giving further information.

According to a Coop employee no one was injured.

“Normally our customers are less forceful and use the main entrance,” joked Coop spokesperson Urs Meier to 20 Minuten.
