Irishman confesses to stabbing wife 50 times

A 49-year-old Irishman has confessed to savagely stabbing his wife to death in the vineyard village of Lutry in the canton of Vaud earlier this week, police said on Thursday.

An employee on his way to do work in a first-floor apartment in the village discovered the blood-soaked body of the 46-year-old woman on Monday afternoon.

Investigators called to the scene encountered the victim’s husband, who needed to be hospitalized for injuries and could not be immediately questioned.

But now Vaud cantonal police said the Irishman has confessed to killing his wife by stabbing her more than 50 times with a knife following a dispute.

He them tried to kill himself, police said.

The prosecutor directing the investigation of the case has sought the man’s detention during ongoing inquiries as to the circumstances of the affair.

Police have not disclosed the nationality of the victim.
