The Eiffel Tower may be the world's most popular spot to take a selfie but there are limits, even in the art world, as a Swiss artist known for her nude performances found out.

Swiss artist and model Milo Moiré was posing naked with passers-by in front of the monument as part of her latest art project, which she has also performed in Basel in Switzerland and the German city of Düsseldof.

But while many tourists jumped at the chance to get their photo taken with the artist, police were not so amused.

They ordered the artist to put her clothes back on before arresting her at around 5pm on Sunday, 20 Minutes reported.

“They took her finger prints, photographed her and put her in a cell,” her manager and partner Peter Palm said in a statement.

Police gave her a warning but she was not charged.

Nudity in public places is an offence in France and can be punishable by a year in jail and a €15,000 fine.

However there are special areas where nudists are allowed.

Moiré is no stranger to controversy.

In 2014 she conducted a "PlopEgg' performance in Basel, where she expelled eggs filled with ink and acrylic paint from her vagina on to a canvas to create a work of art.

And in 2013 she raised a few commuters' eyebrows when she took the Metro in Düsseldorf completely naked.

Moiré also plans to perform in London, Berlin and Madrid.
