Police are seeking witnesses after a man burnt to death on a street in Matten near the tourist resort of Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland.

Canton of Bern police said that the incident happened on Monday night on the main street. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, the man died at the scene.

According to the online version of the 20 Minuten paper the victim had been accompanied by his wife and a child.

It quoted a neighbour as saying he had heard a cry followed by the arrival of police cars.

Another resident reported that the street was covered in foam which the fire brigade had used to put out the blaze.

Part of the street was sealed off for several hours.

A cantonal police spokeswoman told the paper the deceased was a 54-year-old Portuguese resident of the canton of Bern.

There was no sign of the involvement of any other person, she said.
