The man fell on a curve of the winding run from Ruestel to Iltios and slid off the piste shortly after 2pm, cantonal police said in a news release.

He plunged several metres into steep forested terrain, the release said.

An emergency rescue crew equipped with a helicopter was unable to save the man who died from his injuries, police said.

The victim was a resident of the canton of Lucerne.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the accident.
