The man had been snowboarding with a skier and another snowboarder in an area not far from the Italian border when the accident happened, local media reported.
According to those reports, he plunged 25 metres into a crevasse after coming off the ski slopes.
A rescue helicopter was called in, but emergency services workers were unable to do anything.
Recent statistics from Switzerland's Rega air rescue service show that 2015 was a record year for the iconic organization with the warm summer partly to blame as more people visited the Alps.
On average, rescue operations were launched every 35 minutes by the private, non-profit service.
