A Swiss man has cried wolf one too many times. The 33-year-old was arrested in Geneva on Wednesday for calling the police emergency number 59 times since the beginning of the year.

According to news agency ATS the man made the numerous 117 calls in order to get police to come to his home, for no reason in particular.

His actions finally reached a head last week when he called the number around 5.30am to say he had hurt himself with a knife.

When police arrived at his residence they found him uninjured.

The man admitted that he wanted police to come to his home so they could drive him to his mother’s place, Geneva police said in a statement given to ATS on Wednesday.

The police call centre then confirmed that the man had phoned them 59 times since January 1st, and that he’d made 15 calls on the day in question alone.

Making unnecessary phone calls to emergency services in Switzerland can incur a prison sentence of up to three years.

Switzerland has different emergency numbers depending on the service required.

Residents should call 117 for police, 118 for the fire service and 144 for an ambulance.
