The new measures include the random inspection of private vehicles entering the Geneva office precinct and stricter controls of staff and visitors entering United Nations buildings, Director-General of United Nations Office at Geneva Michael Møller told staff on Wednesday.

The tougher controls were in line with a change in the security situation in Switzerland and Europe, Møller said.

European countries have raised threat levels in the wake of the Paris terror attacks in November 2015 and the attacks in Brussels in March of this year.

Almost 1,500 people from 111 nations work at the United Nations in Geneva, according to the organization's 2015 Annual Report.
