Switzerland’s largest city, Zurich, has taken eighth place in a ranking of the most inspiring cities compiled by holiday operator TravelBird.

Top of the 2016 ranking was Miami, Florida.

Zurich was the only Swiss city to make it into the top ten, bolstering its reputation for culture.

It managed to beat off competition from strong rivals including Paris and Barcelona, which came further down the rankings.

In the survey, 85 ‘notable destinations’ around the globe were weighed up against each other, with data divided by population so as to give smaller cities a chance.

TravelBird considered eight different criteria associated with creativity, romance, culture and innovation when making its selection.

Creativity was measured by looking at the number of performing arts companies and art schools, music production and film industry facilities in each location.

The criterion of culture was based on the number of art galleries and museums.

The number of start-ups in each city was also taken into account for the innovation criterion.

The level of romance was based on how romantically inspired visitors were by the location and how many romance-focused keywords were used in Google searches.

Zurich scored well in this category, beating Florence and overall rankings leader Miami, but perhaps unsurprisingly falling short of Paris’s top rating.

The survey also ranked cities according to their attractiveness in different seasons.

According to this ranking, Zurich again took eighth place as an inspiring winter destination.
