The Swiss city of Lausanne will host the third Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Friday.

Lausanne, known as the Olympic Capital as the IOC is headquartered there, beat off competition from Brasov, Romania, during a vote at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, winning 71 votes to Brasov’s 10, the IOC said in a statement.

While both cities “were capable of organizing the Games,” the evaluation commission praised Lausanne for “its good use of existing, temporary and demountable venues, in line with Olympic Agenda 2020 sustainability reforms”.

Over 1,000 athletes aged 15-18 are expected to compete at the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2020, which will be held from January 10th-19th.

Created as a “celebration of sport, youth, diversity and the Olympic values,” the Winter Youth Olympic Games were first held in Innsbruck, Austria in 2012.

The second edition is scheduled to take place from February 12th-21st 2016 in Lillehammer, Norway.

Lausanne has a long association with the Olympics, having been home to the IOC for 100 years – an anniversary it celebrated at the end of June this year.

Numerous international sporting federations have followed the IOC to Lausanne over the past few decades, while the city also boasts the recently renovated Olympic Museum in Ouchy.

Last year Lausanne was named the fifth sportiest city in the world by Olympics-focused news site Around the Rings.
