Three German skiers were killed in an avalanche in eastern Switzerland's Alps, local police said Sunday.

The accident took place some 2,700 metres (8,900 feet) above sea level, from where the three victims and one other member of their group fell 100 metres.

The surviving member was able to free himself from the snow and contact rescue services using his mobile telephone.

The 47-year-old was taken to hospital where he is receiving psychological care and treatment for frostbite.
