Switzerland's Justice Ministry has announced it is setting up a special taskforce to deal with asylum application and immigration.

The initiative is aimed at tackling the expected large number of asylum requests from North Africa, the ministry said in a statement. Recent figures have showed that the applications have not reached dramatic levels yet, but the war in Libya and the recent uprisings in the area could boost the number of asylum seekers.

“The events in North Africa have shown how quickly unexpected events can cause a huge flow of refugees and migrants. Switzerland needs to take steps, in order not to be found unprepared and surprised by such situations,” both at operational and political level, the statement said.

The taskforce, which will include at least 15 experts, will act as an advisory board for the government, when needed.
