Road traffic authorities in Bern have launched a promotional YouTube campaign to invite drivers to apply for special car plates, a report says.

According to the popular daily 20 Minuten, a spot from the Bernese traffic authorities shows a new father surprising his partner who’s still at the hospital with a car plate bearing the child’s birth date. The goal is to encourage Bern motorists to purchase plates with special combinations for their vehicles.

"This year nearly 2,285 plates for a total of 580,000 francs (690,000$) were sold," official Hanspeter Bütler was quoted as saying by the paper. The estimated annual turnover is expected to exceed one million francs, the paper said.

The most coveted combinations - from four-digit numbers to plates such as BE 888 888 – are up for grabs in weekly online auctions. Wedding, birth dates and age groups are also popular among motorists, Bütler told the paper, while roots and prime numbers are mainly chosen by maths fans.
