Arsonists entered a church in western Switzerland, piled prayer books on an altar and set them on fire, local police said on Sunday.

"According to first observations, one or several unidentified people had gathered the prayer books and other objects against the altar and then set them alight," police from the Valais canton said in a statement.

"The wooden altar and a podium have been destroyed," they said, adding that emergency services were alerted to the incident at 11pm on Saturday night by an alarm.

Regional prosecutors have opened a probe into the incident.
