Sion football team sacks fifth coach this season
Swiss football team FC Sion sacked their fifth manager of the season on Monday with Italian 2006 World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso relieved of his job after a series of poor results.
Gattuso, appointed as player-manager in February, has been replaced by Michel Decastel, coach of the club's youth side for the remaining five games of the campaign.
A statement on Sion's website explained that Gattuso was given his marching orders after the team under his guidance only mustered "10 points from the last 11 matches".
The statement added that getting knocked out of the Swiss Cup and "the recent (5-0) humiliation at Saint Gallen" had not helped his cause.
In a bid to improve their fortunes eight youth team players will graduate to the senior squad.
Gattuso, who as a defensive midfielder played a key role in Italy's World Cup success in Germany, joined Sion after a stellar career with AC Milan in June 2012.
Sion, under president Christian Constantin, hit the headlines in 2011 when fiercely challenging their exclusion from the Europa League for fielding ineligible players in their play-off against Celtic.
