Scooter driver dies after head-on crash with car
A 25-year-old drunken driver is facing serious charges after his van slammed head-on into a scooter, killing its driver, on the main road in Flums, in the canton of Saint Gallen, early on Thursday.
Cantonal police said the collision occurred shortly after 6.30am when the motorist overtook another car and crashed his van into the scooter, driven in the opposite direction by a 44-year-old man.
The scooter driver, a married man with children who was travelling to work, died at the scene from his injuries, police said.
The car broke through a fence, overturned and came to rest in a meadow.
The car driver, a citizen of Serbia, blew a blood-alcohol reading of 1.4, significantly above the Swiss legal limit of 0.5.
He was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Police are looking for witnesses, in particular the driver of a grey compact car seen in the vicinity of the accident, who may be able to cast more light on how the accident happened.
