Switzerland's postal service is to start testing deliveries by drone, a spokesman for Swiss Post said on Sunday.

"We will make tests this summer," Bernhard Bürki said, confirming Swiss media reports.

"For a logistics specialist like Swiss Post, that could be interesting."

The pilot project will be carried out in collaboration with SwissWorldCargo and US drone manufacturer Matternet.

Switzerland is thought to be interested in drone technology to help link remote communities across the mountainous country.

However, this is not the first such initiative, with US online retail giant Amazon among the companies already testing plans for delivering packages by the small, unmanned aircraft.

Deutsche Post's subsidiary DHL announced last autumn that it would begin limited deliveries of medicine to a North Sea Island using a "quadcopter" drone.
