Firefighters were called to an unusual situation on Tuesday when a cow fell into a swimming pool.

The unfortunate bovine was one of two cows who had inadvertently wandered into the garden of a private house in Camignolo, in the canton of Ticino, reported broadcaster RSI.

Grazing in the garden, the cow in question happened to walk onto a covered swimming pool.

The cover gave way under the weight of the cow, leaving it floundering in the icy water.

Lugano’s fire service and experts from the Animal Protection Society of Bellinzona attended the scene.

As RSI's footage shows, after removing some of the water from the pool, they managed to get a strap around the animal and lift it out using a tractor.

According to a fire service spokesperson, the cow coped well with its ordeal.

The owner of the pool involved was not at home at the time.
