Police in the canton of Vaud have formally identified the body found buried in a house in Orbe on the weekend as that of a 55-year-old woman who lived in the house with her husband.

The man, a 51-year-old Swiss, has been placed in detention for three months as investigations continue, police said in a statement on Wednesday.

Police were tipped off to the potential presence of a dead body at the property in Orbe at around 7.30pm on Saturday.

A search team was dispatched to the house, and after several hours of investigations they found a body buried in the basement.

A neighbour told Le Matin that police may have been tipped off by the couple's adult daughter, who had become concerned after being unable to contact her mother on the phone.
