Currently, there are rigid rules for when policy holders in Switzerland can switch from one type of compulsory health insurance to another. But that is about to change.

Right now, any change you want to make to your health insurance plan can only be done once a year, during the month of November.

For many people, this rigidity is problematic, as they may find themselves in a situation where they would want to switch to another insurance model during the year, without waiting for the statuary date.

This system will be possible in 2025

From January 1st, consumers will be able to change their insurance model whenever they want, rather than only in November.

In announcing this change, the Federal Council explained that the new system will allow insured persons “to benefit from greater flexibility.”

“This change is particularly suitable for people whose financial means have changed and who are looking to reduce the burden of their premiums,” by opting for a cheaper model without having to wait for the end of the year to do so.

They will be able to choose, at any time of the year, another type of insurance — as long as they remain with the same provider.

If they prefer to change the carrier altogether, rather than just the insurance plan, they would be able to this in November only.
