Zurich residents protest against a new McDonald's branch
The planned opening of a McDonald's restaurant on Limmatquai in Zurich is causing resentment among local residents.
They object that the fast-food giant is planning to open a restaurant with 87 seats in a protected historic building in the old town.
Residents are also worried about the noise and littering caused by the customers of the restaurant, which will operate from 8 am to 1 am, and have already launched two initiatives against the new opening.
This protest is bringing back the memories of a similar situation that occurred several years ago in Lausanne, where residents joined forces to protest against an influx of US fast food restaurants to their city.

On Thursday, MPs accepted to spend additional 1.7 billion francs to purchase weapons and other army equipment, and for more modern accommodations for soldiers.
This was accomplished despite the opposition from left-leaning deputies, who argued that these extra funds are not needed because conventional ground warfare for which the money is intended is not a threat.
Instead, today's risks are new weapons, cyber war, as well as terrorist attacks.
Switzerland probes intelligence leaks to Russia
Swiss defence ministry has launched an investigation into leaks from the country's intelligence service to Russia's military intelligence.
The ministry was responding to revelations by the public broadcaster SRF, based on an internal report from the Swiss Federal Intelligence Service (FIS), which said an officer in charge of the cyber team allegedly transmitted highly sensitive information to the Russian cybersecurity firm, which then ended up in the hands of Russia's spy agency.
For Swiss defence minister Martin Pfister, a reliable intelligence service is of paramount importance for Switzerland's protection, "especially in the current global situation marked by insecurity."
Pfister has launched an administrative investigation led by an external and independent body, which will go over the work of previous investigations -- including those done within the FIS. (AFP)
